A 17-year-old intern must choose between trusting an irresistibly suave dance instructor—or her instincts. SINS07 is a series featuring lighthearted tales that explore each of the seven sins in order, beginning with lust.

Today we have the fabulous indie author, Jess C Scott, on the blog. She's here to talk about her new novel: The Intern, the first in a new series to the likes of a teenage Dirty Dancing meets Punk'd. The book sounds great and I can't wait to read it and see what I think. Here's Jess-

My most recent publication is a YA novel titled, 1: The Intern, part of a SINS07 “seven deadly sins” series. I’m kind of a solo powerhouse type of indie author—I do all the work myself (writing, editing, formatting/publishing, designing/illustrating book covers, and marketing). I’ve been a college student on a tight budget for the past few years, so I’ve needed to keep costs to a minimum.
One of my friends said the book cover was “very me” (whatever that means!). I like bright colors, like hot pink. I guess I was aiming for something fresh that would pique one’s curiosity—and something simple too (my website de-emphasizes clutter as well / maybe it’s something to do with the fact that I’m a Virgo).
The above sketch was done some time in late 2007. I often dig up old sketches for book covers, and avatar images, etc. I don’t really know what I might do with a sketch/illustration once I’ve completed it—I just go with the flow, mostly.
Travel and adventure feature quite a lot in 1: The Intern, which is what I sought to capture via the book cover. I know the theme of lust conjures up images of a couple holding hands (or an image which contains a certain amount of “physical intimacy”), so maybe that is partly why I chose to do something a little different. Besides, without the intern traveling to the site of her internship, there wouldn’t be any story ;).

Based on early feedback I gathered, 1: The Intern is “playful,” “a fun read,” and “creates a curiosity in the reader to know what happens [next].” I think the cover matches up with these descriptions. The next book in the SINS07 series (Book 2, Greed) might feature either an heiress, or a model, so I envision slightly more bling on the design of that cover.

  3. Learned of this book just the other day. I'm always interested in the subject of the 7 Deadly Sins and I love to see how others approach it. A sin per novel in a series sounds very intriguing.
