My Blood Approves

Seventeen-year-old Alice Bonham's life feels out of control after she meets Jack. With his fondness for pink Chuck Taylors and New Wave hits aside, Jack's unlike anyone she's ever met.

Then she meets his brother, Peter. His eyes pierce through her, and she can barely breathe when he's around. Even though he can't stand the sight of her, she's drawn to him.

But falling for two very different guys isn't even the worst of her problems. Jack and Peter are vampires, and Alice finds herself caught between love and her own blood...

Today, we have Amanda Hocking, indie author extraordinaire the My Blood Approves series, the Trylle trilogy, and the upcoming Witches of Honalee series, and Hollowland, plus many others, here for a fantastic and fun interview.

Interview:

Tell me about your books that are already released.

The My Blood Approves series is a love story about vampires living in Minneapolis. Switched is a paranormal romance, and I think it's different than a lot of other books out there.

What about the ones that aren’t out yet?

Hollowland is about zombies, and has a MC that kicks a lot of butt. I wanted to write about someone tougher than I had before. Honalee is about witches, and it's lighter than some of the other stuff I've written.

What has been your favorite creature to write about so far?

The Trylle in Switched. They felt fresh, and that made it more fun.

What exactly is a Trylle?

Basically, they're trolls, but not the hideous ones. It's based on an old bit of Scandinavian folklore I read where trolls were sexy and cunning, but they were ill-tempered and strange.

Ever thought about writing a book about faeries?

I have faeries playing supporting roles in an upcoming WiP, but I don't have any in lead roles. Thus far, anyway.

What about angels, dragons, telepaths, talking lions? What other creatures can we expect from you in the future?

I'm toying with an angels idea, but I haven't started writing yet. Dragons - yes, definitely. I don't know how yet, but yes. I'm also working on a book about Sirens right now. And I have a lion in a book, but it doesn't talk.

Why did you decide to go the self-publishing route?

I wrote a vampire series that nobody wanted because there's about a million vampire novels out there. I liked it, though, so I thought I'd try to do something with it as opposed to letting it die on my computer. The response was amazing, much better than I'd have with anything traditionally, so I don't see any reason to stop now. Plus, the ability to connect with readers is fantastic this way. I love it.

What about the Hungarians? I heard they wanted it. Tell me about that.

There's not much to tell. I'm open to selling foreign rights to other countries, because that's not really something I can myself. But I'm not able to negotiate a contract myself, so I'm trying to land an agent so they can handle that part. A Hungarian company said they were interested in possibly buying the foreign rights. I said I had to talk an agent first. That's all so far.

Can I be your agent?

If you're good with handling contracts and speaking Hungarian.

Maybe I'm not so qualified. Let's move on to My Blood Approves questions... Will we see more of Tony in the rest of the series?

Oh, lol. No. They'll be other love interests in the book, but no, no more Tony.

Do you read YA? If so, what are some of your favorite young adult books?

I love Richelle Mead. She's my favorite. I also enjoy Claudia Gray. I like Judy Blume, but I'm not sure if she's more middle-grade. Imogen Rose is really good, and I liked Stacy Wallace Benefiel.

What is the biggest compliment you get on your books?

That people enjoyed reading the books because the characters seemed so real.

What do you do when you're not writing?

Spend time with friends, watch a lot of movies, make collages, read (but not as much as I should), play video games. Sometimes I take my dog for a walk.

Which character from any of your books would you love to meet in real life?

That's tough. Probably Ezra, because he's so contained, and I'd love to try to make him snap.

Haha, you’re real nice. So, if given the choice, what paranormal creature would you want to be?

Not a vampire. They live too long. Eternity scares me. Maybe an angel. Wings are badass.

When can we expect any upcoming books from you?

Torn - the second book in the Trylle Trilogy - will probably be out in September. Hollowland will definitely be out in Oct. And I'll probably have at least one or two more by the end of the year.

Where can we see you besides this lovely interview?

I know have stuff coming up, but I'm horrible and don't know when or where. Except that I'm a regular blogger here:http://www.indieurbanfantasy.com. And I have my website, where I'm always at & I give stuff away sometimes: http://amandahocking.blogspot.com/. Also, my twitter is @Amanda_Hocking

Anything else you'd like to say?

I'm having a new contest starting Aug 23rd, and I'll be doing something fun when I release Torn because I'll be having new covers. And thanks to everyone for reading the books and being supportive. And thank you for doing the interview. :)
