Kayla McHenry's sweet sixteen sucks! Her dad left, her grades dropped, and her BFF is dating the boy Kayla's secretly loved for years. Blowing out her candles, Kayla thinks: I wish my birthday wishes actually came true. Because they never freakin' do. Kayla wakes the next day to a life-sized, bright pink My Little Pony outside her window. Then a year's supply of gumballs arrives. A boy named Ken with a disturbing resemblance to the doll of the same name stalks her. As the ghosts of Kayla's wishes-past appear, they take her on a wild ride . . . but they MUST STOP. Because when she was fifteen? She wished Ben Mackenzie would kiss her. And Ben is her best friend's boyfriend.Let’s get this out of the way first… 16 Wishes. It’s a Disney channel original movie that just happened to come out a few months ago. And let’s just say the plot is almost a carbon copy of You Wish. Now, if I hadn’t watched 16 Wishes before reading this book, I would have loved it to pieces. I still love it, but it was always in the back of my mind how similar it was to that movie.
Kayla dragged me down most of the time. She never wanted to have fun and always just moped around, acting depressed. She went out of her way to be weird, not different, weird. She never wanted to fit in and tried to pull her friends… I mean friend down with her. She begins to change at the end, but she kinda bugged me. The other characters in the book were much more likeable and I always had a good time while reading about them. Ann and Ken were hilarious and entertaining.
Mandy Hubbard definitely knows how to write. I was never bored and never confused. I had a really fun time reading this and was glad I did because it is the perfect summer read. Just cute and fun. I definitely recommend this as a beach read. I can’t wait to read Hubbard’s other book and whatever else she writes.
The setting definitely confused me at times. It was supposed to be some small cow town, yet it had two malls, several bakeries, a motocross track, a high school with hundreds of kids in it. And let me tell you, I live in a “cow town” and we have a grocery store, a gas station, and a post office. Our school only has about 800 kids in it and that is preschool-12th grade.
Not the most original thing I have ever read, but cute, fun read that keeps you entertained the whole time, You Wish is a great summer read. With it’s mopey protagonist that begins to lighten up towards the end, the funny side characters, the great writing, and the cute story, you will have a great time if you read You Wish.

I'm glad you explained the difference between You Wish and 16 Wishes. I was wondering if they were the same thing, but with a slightly different name.
ReplyDeleteIt does sound like a cute story. That giant My Little Pony sounds pretty funny.
Hmmmmm never seen 16 wishes. Maybe I should watch it! LOL I'll give it a try.
ReplyDeleteYeah, sigh, I watched half of 16 WISHES but I was afraid to see where it went. I wrote YOU WISH, in fact arcs were out in the world, before I heard about the movie.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of the setting- it's my hometown, a real town, and it is in fact, filled with dairy farms. (I Grew up on one.) The malls are not in the town, they are in other towns 30 minutes away.
I posted more information about the town on my blog last week, if you want more info.
THanks for the review!
