Character Interview: Lily Sanderson (Forgive My Fins)

Forgive My Fins

Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it’s not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you’re a normal teenage girl, but when you’re half human, half mermaid like Lily, there’s no such thing as a simple crush.

Lily’s mermaid identity is a secret that can’t get out, since she’s not just any mermaid – she’s a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn’t feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she’s been living on land and going to Seaview high school ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems – like her obnoxious, biker boy neighbor Quince Fletcher – but it has that one major perk – Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren’t really the casual dating type – when they “bond,” it’s for life.

When Lily’s attempt to win Brody’s love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily-ever-after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.

Interview:

First, tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Lily Sanderson, Princess Waterlily of Thalassinia, one of the most prosperous kingdoms in the sea. For the last three years I've been living on land with my aunt Rachel, going to high school and crushing on one particular boy. Basically, I'm just trying to figure things out.

Why did you choose to move away from Thalassinia?

When I found out that my mother was human, and not a mer princess like me, I went to stay with her sister on land to kind of ... get in touch with her world. She died shortly after I was born so I never knew her. Living on land is as close as I can get.

What are your thoughts on Brody?

He. Is. Perfect. He's totally gorgeous, he's driven and talented, and he is one of the most amazing human swimmers I've ever seen. I can't imagine a more perfect mermate, or a more perfect future Thalassinian prince. I just need to work up my courage to tell him how I feel.

What do you think of Quince?

He's an annoying, obnoxious, bothersome, hot-- no, wait, I didn't mean that. He's my sea slug next door neighbor who seems to think it's his mission in life to make mine as miserable as possible. If I had Daddy's trident for two seconds I'd zap him to the other side of the planet.

Do you miss the lifestyle you left in Thalassinia while you are in Seaview?

Well, I miss the palace sushi chef--he really is the best in the world--and my bed and Daddy. And I especially miss the way the waters of Thalassinia make me feel. But I don't miss the attention, everyone's eyes on me all the time. I like the anonymity of living on land as an ordinary human girl.

Who would you say is your bff?

I have two, actually. My underwater bff is Periwinkle Wentletrap. We've been best friends since guppihood, and I can tell her anything. My human bff is Shanne. We've been best friends since I stepped onto land, and I can tell her almost anything.

Describe the feeling you get when you are in the water.

There is a magical connection between merfolk and the water, and whenever I'm submerged I feel ... energized. It's like a million tiny sparkles of energy against my skin. But at the same time it's really
calming, like instant stress relief. Which is why I take so many baths when Quince is around.

Anything else you’d like to say?

Um, read my story so you can find out even more about me and Brody (and, sadly, Quince) and the real mer world.
