Top Ten Books of 2010

So today I thought it'd be fun to put together a list of my favorite books I've read in the past year. There were SO many amazing books to choose from, and it was really hard for me to narrow it down to just ten, but I did it. So, here is the list...

10. Switched by Amanda Hocking

I really, really loved this book--more than I was expecting to. Amanda is awesome as a person, and even after reading one of her other books, I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book. But I did. I loved it! It is such an original new world, and I loved being there for every second of it. The characters were great and the ending left me with a mouth agape. I am dying to get my hands on the next two books!

9. Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

So fun and cute! Kiersten was able to blend dark and light perfectly, and Evie (the protagonist) was so entertaining! I loved being a part of this fresh, creative world and I felt out of place when the book was over. I can't wait for the next two books in this trilogy.

8. The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

This was my first book I've ever read about zombies, and I adored it. Carrie has made a dystopian world that makes you feel like you are living in pre-modern times, but the characters are truly living in a post-modern world. The second book was also amazing, but I think I liked this one a little better. I can't wait to read the third book!

7. Fallen by Lauren Kate

I fell in love with this book after I read it. It was a very character driven book, and I had no problem with that. The ending was spectacular, and I couldn't put the book down after I got a bit through it. Some people say it drags, but I never found it slow or dull for a moment. I didn't like the second book as much, but it was still great.

6. Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Wow. This book was great. Again, some say it is slow, but I didn't see it. I loved Ethan, who is telling the story. He and his friends and enemies helped move this book so well for me. Lena was definitely my favorite character, and I loved seeing the relationship between her and Ethan bloom. The witches in this book have a very fresh, unique twist. I can't wait to start the second book.

5. The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

What an amazing book! Julie has found a way to be so descriptive, making the reader feel as though they are in the amazing fey world, but the story is never slow because of all the description. I adored the unique, amazing world created and the characters were all fantastic. The second book didn't quite live up to the expectations of the first book, but I still loved it. Team Ash, by the way.

4. Firelight by Sophie Jordan

I read this book so, so quickly. The amazingly unique world and paranormal creatures Jordan created in this fresh paranormal book made it so hard to put down. I hadn't ever read any dragon books, and I am glad. I loved having Sophie's mythology being the only one I know. Why isn't the second book out yet? I need that book now! I'm not sure if I am Team Will or Team Cassian, though.

3. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Wow, all the hype for this book was spot on. People have been talking about this series for years, and I don't know why I never picked it up before this year. I simply adored this book, and the amazing and original world Clare created. Cassandra was able to create such a crazily fantastical world, but it felt so realistic. For some reason, I haven't been dying to read the next few books, even though they are sitting right there on my shelf.

2. The Mockingbirds by Daisy Whitney

I read this book about half a year ago, and I still haven't been able to get it out of my mind. It was so breathtaking! An amazing contemporary novel, and I simply adored it. I was a mess during and for a short time after reading this book, because every emotion Alex felt, I felt. She was going through something unimaginable, but I was able to feel exactly what she was. This is probably the best contemporary book I've ever read.

1. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

This was definitely the best book I've read this year. The world Suzanne Collins created entranced me from page one. I couldn't put this book down, it was just too amazing. I feel like this could actually happen one day, which is what makes so many readers so enthralled by this series. The second and third books weren't as good as the first, but they all came together to create one of the most fantastic series ever. There is just too much I could say about this book, it was just incredible.

So those are my top ten books I've read in the past year! Like I said, there are so many more that I wish I could mention, but I had to narrow it down. I can't wait to see which books I love the most next year.

Comment Discussion: What are your top ten favorite books you've read in the past year?

Half Moon by Jordan Deen (Black Rose: January 13, 2011)

Looking Back

Fairy Tale by Cyn Balog (Delacorte: June 23, 2009)
The Everafter by Amy Huntley (HarperCollins: October 1, 2009)

Fairy Tale: All of Cyn's books look great, and I cannot wait to read them. This is her debut, and it sounds as fantastic as her others.
The Everafter: My interest in this stems from the fact that the author lives about two hours away from me, which is awesome. The book sounds pretty rad, also.

So, which of these looks the best to you? What are some books you're looking forward to? Comment below and let me know!

Sapphique, by Catherine Fisher

Title: Sapphique (Incarceron, #2)
Author: Catherine Fisher
Publisher: Dial
Release: December 28, 2010
Source: Around the World ARC Tours

Finn has escaped from the terrible living Prison of Incarceron, but its memory torments him, because his brother Keiro is still inside. Outside, Claudia insists he must be king, but Finn doubts even his own identity. Is he the lost prince Giles? Or are his memories no more than another construct of his imprisonment? And can you be free if your friends are still captive? Can you be free if your world is frozen in time? Can you be free if you don't even know who you are? Inside Incarceron, has the crazy sorcerer Rix really found the Glove of Sapphique, the only man the Prison ever loved. Sapphique, whose image fires Incarceron with the desire to escape its own nature. If Keiro steals the glove, will he bring destruction to the world? Inside. Outside. All seeking freedom. Like Sapphique.

Many of you know that when I read Incarceron, I had very high expectations and was let down with it. So, naturally, I had low expectations this time around. And I was very pleased to find that I loved what I got this time!

The characters were hard to remember until you read a little bit and then most of the first book comes back to you and you suddenly recall all the happenings in Incarceron. So the characters that I wasn’t too fond of last time came back to me and I actually enjoyed reading about them this time. Each of the characters had their own unique personality and they were all quite fun to read.

The writing, as in the last book, is beautiful and flawless. The style is so descriptive that the entire time you can envision every little detail. With years and years of practice writing novels, I would expect no less from Catherine Fisher. But she did deliver a great, well-written fantasy epic.

Though Incarceron (the book, not the place) was incredibly confusing, I had a clear idea of what was happening the whole time I was reading Sapphique. The story was clear and the fantasy world Fisher has created amazed me this time around. I actually enjoyed reading the book, quite the opposite of my feelings toward Incarceron.

Though the ending was a little too happy for my taste, it did do a good job of wrapping up this two-book series. There were no loose ends and everything worked out hunky-dory for everyone in the book.

A great ending to a short, fantasy series, Sapphique surpassed the book before it, Incarceron, by miles. The characters were better to read this time and were fun and enjoyable. The writing was clear and beautiful and I was very happy with it. The story, unlike Incarceron, was clear and I actually understood what was going on this time! Definitely pick up this series, you will not be disappointed.

Beasts and BFF's, by Shannon Delany

Title: Beasts and BFFs (13 to Life, #0.5))
Author: Shannon Delany
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Release: December 17, 2010
Source: Bought

I loved the first book in the 13 to Life series, 13 to Life. That said, I was excited to see catch a glimpse of what happened before the series begins. When I discovered Shannon Delany’s prequel story, I was elated and decided I needed to get it immediately.

It was so nice to be back into the world of 13 to Life. Though you don’t get a lot of that exciting werewolf action, you do get an insight into the characters and see why they have some of the feelings and thoughts that they do. And, you get to see what Jessica was like before she met Pietr.

Beasts and BFF's was the perfect filler to hold me over until the next 13 to Life book comes out. I can’t wait to see what Shannon Delany has up her sleeve next, since this story made me hungry for more!

Ask Alex #3

Ask Alex:

Answering your burning questions about blogging, reading, writing, and everything in between!
_____________________________

How do you get rid of the ".blogspot" in your URL?

It's relatively easy, but it does cost ten dollars a year. Just go to blogger, then click settings, then publishing. There, there is a number of different things you can do to your URL, including dropping the ".blogspot". You can even change your URL to something different, and keep the ".blogspot" part if you want!

Do you recommend having a review policy?

Definitely! Otherwise, there will be a whole bunch of people asking you to review books that you don't want to read. It's easier to just skip the hassle and only have books you enjoy being requested to you. Sure, there are those who ignore review policies altogether, but for the most part I think it's a good idea to have.

How long have you been blogging, and when did you get your first follower?

I'm not sure how to answer this. I started off a little over a year ago and back then I only did YouTube reviews. A few weeks later (December 12, 2010), I started this blog. I think I had my first follower within a few hours, but only because I made a video about my blog on YouTube, and I was already gaining a following on there.

What is your advice to writers? What do you think of fanfic?

I think if you really enjoy writing, go for it. Write whatever you want and don't listen to the masses or follow the trends in your writing. If you want to write a book about a dog who can juggle, do it. I've never really gotten into fanfic, but I have been known to write erotic, gay, fanfiction for the Knightley Academy series. Thankfully, the author loves it.

How long does it take for you to write a review?

If I buckle down and focus, it takes me ten minutes max. Otherwise, probably twenty if I am surfing the web in between writing sentences. The words come pretty naturally to me. Also, I do very little editing when my review is written.  But I don't think there is any time limit for how long it should take you. As long as your thoughts and feelings are formulated well, you can take three days.

Retro Demonology, by Jana Oliver

Title: Retro Demonology (Demon Trappers, #0.5)
Author: Jana Oliver
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin

Release: December 17, 2010
Source: Bought

Having never experienced any of Jana Oliver’s work, I was curious to see what her writing would be like. Once I discovered Retro Demonology, I knew this was the perfect way to find out if I wanted to read more of Oliver’s work. And thanks to this story, I cannot wait to get my hands on the first book in the Demon Trapper’s series.

From page one, I was hooked. The world built is so fresh and new, and kept me wanting more with each page. The concept is fresh and unique, and I can’t wait to read more about it in future Demon Trapper’s books. The story was addicting and fun.

I very much enjoyed the writing and that is just one more reason I cannot wait to get my hands on The Demon Trapper’s Daughter, the first book in this series that is surely going to please. I can’t wait to dive back into this world.

Future Favorites #18

Future Favorites is an awesome blog feature here at Electrifying. Each time I do one of these, I post about a few books that are yet-to-be-released and that I can't wait to read!

Divergent by Veronica Roth (Katherine Tegen: May 3, 2011)
Rage by Jackie Morse Kessler (Harcourt Graphia: April 18, 2011)

Divergent: Wow, what a concept--and cover! I cannot wait to read this awesome sounding (and looking) dystopian debut!
Rage: The first book was great, and I cannot wait to read this one! And this one is about fifty percent bigger than the first book!

Abandon by Meg Cabot (Scholastic: April 26, 2011)
Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton (Random House: April 26, 2011)

Abandon: Don't hurt me, but... I've never read a Meg Cabot book! Gasp! I promise to read one soon, and then I can enjoy Abandon! It looks like a fantastic retelling.
Blood Magic: Awesome cover! This sounds like a fresh, exciting concept!

Burn Bright by Marianne de Pierres (Random House Australia: March 1, 2011)
Bumped by Megan McCafferty (HarperCollins: April 26, 2011)

Burn Bright: Beautiful cover! Fresh, interesting concept. But why must this be an Australian only release? American rights must be sold now!
Bumped: Another awesome sounding dystopian to look forward to! The cover reminds me of the icon you have on twitter if you don't have a picture.

The Midnight Twins by Jacquelyn Mitchard (Razorbill: July 3, 2008)

As You Wish: I have heard so much praise for this book, I can't believe I haven't read it yet!
The Midnight Twins: Last year, I saw a girl at my school reading this book (I was surprised too), and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind since. Plus, it was released on my twelfth birthday.

So, which of these looks the best to you? And what books are you looking forward to reading? Comment below and let me know!

Remedial Magic, by Jenna Black

Title: Remedial Magic (Faeriewalker, #1.5))
Author: Jenna Black
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Release: December 17, 2010
Source: Bought

Being a big fan of the Faeriewalker series, I was anxious and excited when I discovered Remedial Magic. I quickly got it and read it in one sitting, which is easy since it is only a few pages long. But that’s what a short story is, right!

I enjoyed having new insight into Kimber’s character. I enjoyed feeling her emotions towards herself and her brother. It was a nice break from the nonstop action we are used to in the Faeriewalker world.

After a moment, I was shot back into the Faeriewalker world and loved being there. Once the story got going, the exhilarating and exciting action didn’t stop. The concept is a bit odd, but entertaining nonetheless. Remedial Magic is a great story to read while you are waiting for the next book in the Faeriewalker series.

Origins, by L.J. Smith

Title: Origins (The Vampire Diaries: Stefan's Diaries, #1)
Author: L.J. Smith
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release: November 2, 2010
Source: Bought

Set during the Civil War, against a backdrop of grand estates, unimaginable riches, and deadly secrets, three teenagers in Mystic Falls, Virginia enter a torrid love triangle that will span eternity. Brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore are inseparable until they meet Katherine, a stunning, mysterious woman who turns their world upside down. Siblings turned rivals, the Salvatores compete for Katherine's affection, only to discover that her sumptuous silk dresses and glittering gems hide a terrible secret: Katherine is a vampire. And she is intent on turning them into vampires so they can live together-forever.

Being a huge fan of all of L.J. Smith’s books, including The Vampire Diaries series, I was eager to discover how another writer would interpret the world she inspired. If you think this will be just like the other Vampire Diaries books, know that it is one hundred percent based off of the television show. The only similarity to the books are the names, as it is with the show. That said, I still enjoyed it tremendously.

Stefan is telling the story in this series, and I enjoyed hearing his voice retell the story of his past. I easily fell into the story he was narrating, and enjoyed seeing the world through his eyes. He does counter himself a bit, which got to me after a while, however. The rest of the characters were very well written, and I felt as though they were taken from screen to page perfectly.

Though we do not know who actually wrote this book, they did a great job. Unlike Smith’s writing, this story wasn’t bogged down with description and detail, which I quite liked. I do adore L.J. Smith’s writing style, but she can load on a bit too much description at times. With this book, you get just enough description and feel as though you are living the story.

I had the unique experience of someone who doesn’t watch the show. Sure, I’ve seen a few episodes, but I don’t tune in every week, eyes bulging at the screen with every twist and turn the story creates. That said, I didn’t know too much about how this book differentiates from the show’s plot.

I really enjoyed reading this book, as it takes you into the past of Stefan, Damon, and Katherine. While it is nothing like the books I adore, I know that fans of the television show and book series alike should take a chance on this book, even if it does deter from the story we have become so accustomed to. I’m counting the days until the next Stefan’s Diaries book is release, which thankfully is very soon.

Personal Demons, by Lisa Desrochers

Title: Personal Demons
Author: Lisa Desrochers
Publisher: Tor Teen
Release: September 14, 2010
Source: Author
Frannie Cavanaugh is a good Catholic girl with a bit of a wicked streak. She's spent years keeping everyone at a distance—even her closest friends—and it seems her senior year will be more of the same...until Luc Cain enrolls in her class. No one knows where he came from, but Frannie can't seem to stay away from him. What she doesn't know is that Luc works in Acquisitions—for Hell—and she possesses a unique skill set that has the King of Hell tingling with anticipation. All Luc has to do is get her to sin, and he’s as tempting as they come. Frannie doesn’t stand a chance.  Unfortunately for Luc, Heaven has other plans, and the angel, Gabe, is going to do whatever it takes to make sure that Luc doesn’t get what he came for. And it isn't long before they find themselves fighting for more than just her soul. But if Luc fails, there will be Hell to pay…for all of them.

God, the reviews for this book have been mixed. Everywhere I look, someone is saying how much they either love or hate this book. And now that I’ve read it, I’m wondering what kind of narcotics the people who gave it a bad review were doing. Also, where can I get some?

This book is told from two perspectives, Luc and Frannie. I don’t know who’s point of view I liked reading from better, they both told the story well and kept me addicted the whole time I was reading. The only thing I didn’t understand was how Frannie was so hesitant. She had two of the hottest guys in the world—actually, not even in the world, she had guys from multiple worlds—and she didn’t hook up with either of them! Also, she had the worst friends. They were such catty bitches! Well, Taylor was anyway.

I loved the writing style Lisa Desrochers wrote with. The whole time I was addicted to the story, never wanting to put it down. Several times I was telling myself I would put the book down after I finished just one more chapter. Do you think I put it down after that chapter? Hell no!

Sure there are plenty of books about angels and demons, but nothing like this. I was completely exhilarated during the entire duration of my reading experience with this book. I couldn’t wait to read what would happen next with these entertaining characters in this astonishing world.

If you haven’t read Personal Demons, what the hell are you doing with your life? Quit living on a prayer and get your booty to the bookstore, because you’ll be hooked from the moment your eyes meet the first page of this book. I would tag countless souls if I could get my devilish little paws on the sequel.

Oh, and if you were wondering, I am one hundred percent Team Luc. Gabe can go to hell. Well, he can’t but… well, you know what I mean.

Outdated vs. Updated #3

Outdated vs. Updated is a feature here where every time I make one of these posts, I will be discussing two covers of the same book. All the time, books get makeovers, having brand new covers for the same book. Here, I will be discussing both covers and telling you which I prefer.
_______________________

Round One: Hollowland

These two covers are so similar, yet so different. The old cover is very zombie-esque, whereas the new one is very "love bites". Even though I feel the old cover is a better representation of what the book is really about, it doesn't look like a young adult book. The new cover is definitely more fun, and will appeal to younger readers, yet it is very plain. This is a hard decision, but...

Winner: Updated

Round Two: Claire de Lune

Well. I have always loved the original cover, since the first day I saw it. It is so pretty, so magical, so BLUE! And when I found out they would be giving the cover a makeover for the paperback release, I was eager to see what other amazing things they could come up with to make it even better. Unfortunately, I don't think they did make it better. To be honest, I am bored with the new cover. It is definitely not the kind of book I would pick up at a bookstore, which is a problem. When teenagers aren't going to be interested in the cover of a book, most won't pick it up. I just feel like they could have kept the old cover, and done something similar for Nocturne. I still like the new cover, but since I have already seen what a great cover they already had, it makes me appreciate it less.

Winner: Outdated

Round Three: She's So Dead to Us

Two really cool covers, in my opinion. The outdated cover is elegant and simple, but I can see where a lot of people wouldn't be inclined to pick it up. I still think it's a great cover, however. The updated cover has so much energy! I really like how it is more modernized, while still keeping roots to the original cover. They did a really good job making a more appealing cover that is just as good, if not better than the original.

Winner: Updated

The Oracle of Dating, by Allison van Diepen

Title: The Oracle of Dating (The Oracle of Dating, #1)
Author: Allison van Diepen
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Release: May 1, 2010
Source: Publisher

No one at Kayla's school knows she's the famous Oracle of Dating— the anonymous queen of dating advice. She doesn't even have a boyfriend. Two relationship disasters were enough to make Kayla focus on everyone else's love life. But then her advice backfires on her own best friend. And Kayla starts to seriously obsess about Jared Stewart—the very cute, very mysterious new guy in school. Suddenly, the teen queen of advice needs her ownoracle of dating—and she knows just where to find one...
Judging by the cover and synopsis, I thought this book would be geared towards the younger demographic of readers. While it is very light and fun, it is still for teenagers, and there are some mature things that happen and are discussed in this book. But who really cares?

Kayla was a unique, intelligent character who had her head on straight. She is caught between her social life and trying to keep her mind professional, so she can give her readers good advice. I could totally relate to the fact that she has a blog that she keeps from her friends—so do I! Her friends were quirky and entertaining, but I felt like they all kind of meshed together into one giant friend-blob. Their unique personalities didn’t stand out much, which took away some of the realism.

I enjoyed the writing style of this book, but it could be pretty choppy at times. I felt as though it transitioned between some scenes without much explanation, and I found myself having to take a second to figure out what was going on in the story.

I loved the concept and story of this book! It was adorably cute and fun, while still able to keep the realistic teenage atmosphere alive. I found myself totally taken over by the world and characters, and was eagerly flipping pages to find out where the Oracle and her friends were led next.

I’m really glad I picked this book up, since I had such a great time reading it. I devoured it in just a few sittings, and was barely able to ever put it down. If you’re looking for a light, quick read, The Oracle of Dating is definitely for you. I can’t wait to read the sequel, along with the rest of Allison van Diepen’s books.

Future Favorites #17

Future Favorites is an awesome blog feature here at Electrifying. Each time I do one of these, I post about a few books that are yet-to-be-released and that I can't wait to read!

Entangled by Cat Clarke (Quercus: January 6, 2011)
Possession by Elana Johnson (Simon & Schuster: June 7, 2011)

Entangled: Why does this have to be a UK only release? A publishing house in the US needs to pick this up! If they don't, I'll pay the shipping to get this book to me! It sounds great!
Possession: Oh my, oh my, this sounds like a fantastic dystopian novel. What more can I say besides the fact that I NEED this book!

Fins Are Forever by Tera Lynn Childs (Katherine Tegen: June 28, 2011)
Across the Universe by Beth Revis (Razorbill: January 11, 2011)

Fins Are Forever: I love, love, loved the first book! I cannot wait for this sequel. Hope there will be more after this one!
Across the Universe: A sci-fi book for people who don't like sci-fi? That's me, so sign me up!

Hexbound by Chloe Neill (Signet: January 20, 2011)
Falling Under by Gwen Hayes (New American Library: March 1, 2011)

Hexbound: The first book was great and set up the series well. I cannot wait to see where Lily and her friends are led in this edition!
Falling Under: Sounds like a great read! Another YA novel to look forward to!

Which of these looks the best to you? What are some books you are looking forward to? Comment below and let me know!
